Math 421: Software
  • Mathematica current version (at least 5.1 and preferably 5.2).  This numerics-symbolics-graphics package is installed on the PCs at the Math & Stat Resource Center (LGRT 110), at UMASTR Lab (Du Bois Library 1667), and on PCs and Macs at all OIT-managed public labs. It includes complete on-line documentation. I will help you learn how to use and program in Mathematica.

If you wish to run Mathematica on your own Windows, Macintosh (OS 10.2 or later), or Linux computer, you can buy one of several versions just for students.  These are the full product, not crippled in any way (except you see “Mathematica for Students” printed at the bottom of pages, and to get tech support beyond installation issues you must rely on on-line forums rather than contacting the publisher directly).

    The for-students version are:
  • However, since Mathematica is available at the Mathematics & Statistics Resource Center, at UMASTR Lab, and elsewhere on campus, you are not required to buy this software.

  • David Park’s Cardano3 and DrawGraphics Mathematica add-on packages.  These are installed at the labs. If you have your own copy of Mathematica, then I can give you a free copy of Park’s packages for your own use only.  Installation instructions are available.

  • Course-specific Mathematica notebooks — live electronic documents — downloadable from the Files page on this web site.  The very same notebooks that work on Windows PCs work identically on Macs and Linux computers.

  • Firefox 1.5 (or later) web browser along with three special sets of mathematical fonts.  Firefox with those fonts may be needed in order to read some mathematical materials on-line.

Firefox is installed on the lab computers along with those fonts.  You may download Firefox to your own computer from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/.

Then download the fonts from http://www.mozilla.org/projects/mathml/fonts/: see the “Fonts to Install” panel at the top right of that page.

  • The Adobe Acrobat Reader plug-in,Version 6 or later, to read on-line versions of some homework set assignments and notes.  It is also installed on lab computers; you can download it for free to your own computer.
