Missing a mid-semester exam due to an emergency, medical problem, or special circumstances

In such a case, notify me in writing. Although you may miss one of the three mid-semester exams without penalty (since only the best two scores are used), you should still notify me in case events force you to miss a second mid-semester exam, too.

In case of a medical emergency, submit a statement from a medical professional.  While it is your right not to disclose any details, the medical professional's statement must indicate that you were medically incapable of taking the scheduled exam. If it is possible to contact me in advance but you do not do so, you will not be allowed to arrange a make-up that would otherwise be allowed.

If an emergency forces you to leave campus, it is best to notify the Dean of Students (545-2684), who will verify the details and notify the instructors of all affected courses.

If you must miss an exam due to an official University event (e.g., a team competition or band performance), submit written justification from the relevant campus official.

Note that there is no make-up if you miss one mid-semester exam. (See the About Exams page.) The only situation in which a make-up may be arranged is if you must miss more than one mid-semester exam.

Missing the final exam due to an emergency, medical problem, or special circumstances

Contact me and request an Incomplete. I will evaluate the reasons and determine whether and how to allow you to compensate for the absence. Make-up exams cannot be given just to accommodate travel plans! Otherwise, you may receive a grade of F in the course.

Missing the final exam due to travel plans is not an emergency!

Official conflict with the final exam

If you have an official conflict with the scheduled final exam, then you must give me written notification of the conflict, along with appropriate documentation, at least two weeks before the date of the exam.

You have a conflict that qualifies you for a make-up exam in Math 331 if:

• you have three exams the same day and the Math 331 exam is the middle one of the three; or
   
• you have another final exam scheduled at the same time as the Math 331 exam and the final digit(s) of the 5-digit "class number" 36459 of Math 331.1 is higher than the final digit(s) of the 5-digit "class number" for the other course.*

In these two cases, the requisite documentation is written certification of the conflict from the Academic Scheduling Office.

You are also entitled to a make-up exam in Math 331 if you are away on an official off-campus trip. In this case, the requisite documentation is written justification from the appropriate official.

          
* The class number for Math 331.1 is 36459. So if the class number in the other course is 97068 or 12397 or anything else not ending in 9, then the make-up will be in Math 331. If the other class number is 23789 (with a tie in the final digit), then the other course should give the make-up (because 89 > 59); whereas if the other class number is 23749 (also with a tie in the final digit), then the make-up would be in Math 331 (because 59 > 49).
