Caution: Prior to 2006 this middle exam consisted exclusively of questions about calculating derivatives symbolically (and so was known as the “symbolics exam”. As of Fall 2006 it included other types of questions—e.g., deriving formulas for derivatives and interpreting derivatives as rates of change—and is called simply “Exam 2”. (The Fall 2007 exam covered exponential growth & decay, which is not in the current semester’s Exam 2.

How can you check whether your answers to to problems on calculating derivatives symbolically? You can, of course, ask your lecturer or TA. Or, for more immediate checks, you can do one of the following:

  • Use your TI-89 calculator and compare its answer.

  • Point your browser to http://www.calc101.com and click the link Derivatives there. Now you can enter any function and get back not just its derivative, but the steps used to find that derivative!  (It even finds the second derivative, too.)
