9/5/08 Changing sections and WebAssign records

If you drop one section of Math 131 and add another during the Add/Drop period, it is essential that you let your new instructor know right away, so that our new instructor can transfer your WebAssign homework record from the old section to the new section.

Discussion sections do meet week of September 2

Discussion sections scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday do meet the first week—even when the first discussion precedes the first lecture!

Each MWF, MW, or TuTh lecture section has an associated 4th hour discussion session (but each of the several double-size lecture sections has two associated discussion sections, and you must have registered for one of those two). You must attend the discussion section that is associated with the lecture section and in which you are enrolled!

Required textbook and WebAssign on-line homework system

We use the sixth edition of the text. It is available in an inexpensive paper-bound edition custom-made for UMass Amherst.

The WebAssign on-line homework system is required in all Math 131 lecture sections, and you must buy access to WebAssign. To do that, buy the textbook+WebAssign package.

The textbook+WebAssign package is available either from a special web site set up by the publisher or at the campus Textbook Annex. See the details here.

This is the recommended, “officially-supported” calculator.

Need to change sections of Math 131?

Do it through Spire.

There are no waiting lists for closed Math 131 sections.

If the only section not conflicting with the courses in which you are already enrolled is one that is already closed because it is full, try to find somebody else who wants to change sections in the other direction. Then agree to do your two section changes essentially simultaneously, before a third party squeezes in.
