Math Club Talk: Tori Day, Squares Modulo p (Tuesday, Nov. 26 - 5:00 - LGRT 1528)

In this talk, we’ll focus on answering the two questions:
  1. Is -1 a square modulo p?
  2. Is 2 a square modulo p?

To do this, we’ll first review some modular arithmetic and what it means to be a square modulo p. Then, we will work together to answer those two questions and see some applications of those answers. We’ll end by stating the Law of Quadratic Reciprocity, and briefly talking about its proof and some applications, as time allows. There will be lots of examples to work out and patterns to find, so come ready to do some math!

Math Club Talk - GaYee Park

Member Julie GaYee Park gave a math club talk. Here is her abstract:

Platonic solids are the three-dimensional analogy of regular n-gons. Unlike in the case of regular polygons, of which there are infinitely many, there are only five of these polyhedrons. In this talk we will talk about a brief history of Platonic solids and some of their interesting properties, including their geometric and group-theoretic structures. Then we will prove that there can be no more than five Platonic solids using two different approaches: geometric properties and combinatorial properties.

Grad School Panel

AWM was thrilled to invite 5 UMass graduate students from the math department to our graduate school panel. GaYee Park, Rose Berns-Zieve, Terry Mullen, Maddie Gordon, and Kristin Lieber joined us to share their experience with applying to graduate schools and deciding on what program was right for them. It was a great chance for undergraduates considering graduate school to gain insightful advice from current grad students.
