There are scanners available for your use in the computer lab (LGRT 1585), connected to the computers labeled lab1585-4.math.umass.edu and lab1585-5.math.umass.edu. Instructions for using the scanners are provided next to each computer. How can I access department printers from my personal laptop?
To access the department printers from a personal laptop, you will first have to be connected to the math department network, via either Ethernet or WiFi. For instructions on how to do this, see Connecting to the Math Department Network
In order to then install the department printers, follow the steps below for your operating system:
Windows
- Connect to the math network, either via Ethernet or a wireless access point
- Download the following two Xerox drivers:
To install the Versalink B400 and Versalink B610 drivers:
- Right-click on each of the downloaded
.zip
files, and then select "Extract all...". - When prompted for a destination folder, type
C:\Xerox\VersaLink_B610
orC:\Xerox\VersaLink_B400
and then click "Extract"
- Right-click on each of the downloaded
- To add a new printer: Click Start > Search for “Printers & Scanners” --> Add A Printer --> The Printer I Want Isn't Listed --> Select A Shared Printer By Name --> Depending on which printer you’d like to install, type in one of the following URLs:
- 11th Floor Printer: https://print-spool.math.umass.edu:631/printers/1115A-XeroxB610DN
- 12th Floor Printer: https://print-spool.math.umass.edu:631/printers/1235A-XeroxB610DN
- 13th Floor Printer: https://print-spool.math.umass.edu:631/printers/1335N-VersalinkB400
- 14th Floor Printer: https://print-spool.math.umass.edu:631/printers/1435A-XeroxB610DN
- 15th Floor Printer: https://print-spool.math.umass.edu:631/printers/1585-XeroxB610DN
- 16th Floor Printer: https://print-spool.math.umass.edu:631/printers/1637-XeroxB610DN
- If step 3 is successful, you will next be presented with a list of print vendors and drivers. Choose Xerox from the left menu, and then the printer model from the right menu ("Versalink B400 PS" for 13th floor; "Versalink B610 PS" for the 11th, 12th, 14th, 15th, and 16th floor). Select OK. This should load the driver and install the printer.
NOTE: If any of these options are not available, you will have to locate them manually. You should only have to do this step once for each printer model (VersaLink B400 & VersaLink B610):
- From the window listing the print drivers, click "Have Disk..."
- Another pop-up window will appear. Click "Browse" and navigate to the Destination Folder from step 2.2 for the correct printer model. Select the setup file "Xerox_VersaLink_B600_B605_B610_B615_PS.inf" for a VersaLink B610 printer (12th, 14th, 15th, and 16th floor) or "XeroxVersaLinkB400_B405_PS.inf" for the VersaLink B400 printer on the 13th floor. Click "Open".
- Click "OK" and then select "Xerox VersaLink B610 V4 PS" / "Xerox VersaLink B400 V4 PS" depending on the printer
- Accept and continue through the remainder of the installation prompts.
- The printer will now be installed for the current user only. To make the printer available to all users on your machine, you'll need to complete the following process:
- Return to the "Printers & scanners" settings menu (refer to Step 3).
- On the right-hand side you will see a column of various options. Under the header "Related settings", select the option "Printer server properties" and go to the "Ports" tab on the pop-up window.
- You'll now see a table with columns labelled "Port", "Description", and "Printer". Hit the button "Change Port Settings" in the bottom left corner to bring up another window.
- Click on the row associated with your printer and hit the "Configure Port..." button below the table. This will bring up a window with the title "Configure Internet Port".
- Under "Security Options", select "Use the specified user account" and enter your math department credentials (do NOT include @math.umass.edu in the User Name). Then, check the box "Use the same security setting for all users", and finally click "Ok" at the bottom of the window.
- This will return you to the "Printer Server Properties" window, on which you should hit "Close" to save the changes you made.
- Repeat steps 3-5 for each printer you would like to install.
- Once the printers have been added, you will be able to print directly to any of the department printers whenever your computer is connected to the math network.
When prompted for a username and password, enter in your math department credentials. You should NOT include "@math.umass.edu" in the username.
macOS
- Log into an account with administrative credentials
- Click here to automatically download the file
dept_printers3.zip
- Extract the contents of the zip file (double-click on the dept_printers3.zip file). This should create a folder in your Downloads folder named
dept_printers3
that contains several files, includinginstall-printers.sh
. (Note that the most recent versions of MacOS X may extract the zip file to a folder automatically, in which case you may skip this step). - Open a terminal window (Applications > Utilities > Terminal). Navigate into the
dept_printers3
folder - this can be done by typing the following command into the terminal window, then hitting the Enter key:cd ~/Downloads/dept_printers3/
Note: If you choose to extract the files to a location other than your Downloads folder, you should navigate to that directory instead
- Next, run the printer installation script by typing the following command verbatim into the Terminal:
./install-printers.sh
Again, hit the Enter key to execute the command. Type in your admin account password when prompted, then hit Enter. (Note that the terminal does not display any characters as you type the password – this is normal and your keystrokes are still being recorded by the terminal)
- To verify the installation was successful, open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners. Five department printers (one for each floor) should now be listed among your printers
- Once the printers have been installed, you will be able to print directly to any department printer as long as your computer is currently connected to the math network. Note that the first time you attempt to print to each printer, you will be prompted for credentials. Mac OS will autofill your computer account name as the username - replace this with your math department username (do NOT include "@math.umass.edu") and enter your math department password. It is up to you whether you would like to save the password or enter it every time. (NOTE: If you choose to store the password, you will need to clear your keychain any time you change your department password, before you will be able to print again)
Linux
- Log into an account with admin (sudo) credentials
- Click here to automatically download the file
dept_printers3.zip
- Open a new Terminal window
- Extract the contents of the zip file and run the installation script by typing each of the following commands one by one into the Terminal, separated by the Enter key:
cd ~/Downloads/ unzip dept_printers3.zip cd dept_printers3/ ./install-printers.sh
- Type in your admin account password when prompted, then hit Enter. (Note that the terminal does not display any characters as you type the password – this is normal and your keystrokes are still being recorded by the terminal)
- Once the printers have been installed, you will be able to print directly to any department printer as long as your computer is currently connected to the math network. Note that the first time you attempt to print to each printer, you will be prompted for credentials. Use your math department username (do NOT include "@math.umass.edu") and password. It is up to you whether you would like to save the password or enter it every time.
