About Math 331.1:
Prerequisites

Prerequisites: Math 131 and 132 (single-variable differential and integral calculus).

Corequisite:   Math 233 (multivariable calculus). See further information below.*

Helpful but not necessary: Math 235 (linear algebra)

* It is quite possible to take Math 331 without having taken Math 233, or even without taking it at the same time. All that's needed is some familiarity with:

  • representing points in 3-dimensional space using x-, y-, and z- axes;
  • 2- and 3-dimensional vectors (adding, multiplying by scalar, representing as arrows);
  • functions z = f(t, y) having several inputs and taking scalar (real) values;
  • partial derivatives of such functions f(t, y) with respect to t and with respect to y;
  • functions V(t) = (x(t), y(t)) and V(t) = (x(t), y(t), z(t)) having scalar (real) input t and taking 2- and 3-dimensional vector values, respectively; and
  • interpreting the graphs such functions V(t) as curves in the plane and in space, respectively.

What is not needed is any familiarity with multiple integrals or line integrals (whose study occupies a major part of Math 233).
