The overall grading policy for all sections of Math 127 is explained on the main Math 127 web site. Here is additional policy for Eisenberg’s Math 127 section 2 regarding the 20% portion of your course score that is for homework, quizzes, and class participation.
Note that your work on the “suggested problems” from the text will not be collected or graded.
Components of the 20% portion
- Regular OWL homework assignments (5 points each)
These are sets of OWL problems, roughly one set per textbook section.
- Pre-class OWL assignments (2 points each)
These are due before each class meeting at which new material is being covered. You are expected to read ahead of time the textbook section that will be covered in class. The pre-class OWL assignment is intended to motivate you to do that reading and to help us make the best use of class time.
No credit whatsoever will be given for a pre-class assignment once class begins on the assignment’s due date.
- In-class quizzes (2 points each)
At nearly every class, you will work in groups on a written quiz, typically involving material covered at that class. Each group submits one paper with the group members’ names and student ID numbers on the paper. (You provide the paper!) Everybody in the group gets the same score. Graded papers are returned in class, typically at the next meeting.
There are no make-ups for missed in-class quizzes (but see below).
Calculating the 20% portion score
Let T be the total number of points you have earned from regular OWL homework, pre-class OWL assignments, and in-class quizzes, as described above. Let M be the maximum possible point total for these things. Then your 20% score is:
20 T / (M – 30)
The – 30 there provides a bit of leeway for you to miss some work over the semester without an undue penalty. It accounts for all reasons you may not have completed the work, including official excuses for absence, illness, etc.
Example: Suppose there are 25 regular OWL assignments and 30 class meetings with a pre-class OWL assignment and an in-class quiz. Then
M = 5 (25) + 2 (30) + 2 (30) = 245.
Suppose, moreover, you earned a total of T = 155 points. Then your 20% portion would be:
