Math 300.2: Aims & content

Math 300 is an introduction to mathematical rigor and proof in the context of several topics, including: logic and set theory; induction and recursion; number theory; real numbers; and infinite sets. It is aimed primarily at those expecting to major or minor in math.

The objective of Math 300 is for you to learn to read, understand, create, and communicate coherent, logically correct proofs based upon precisely stated axioms, definitions, and theorems.

Math 300 should help you make the transition from calculus and other lower-level courses to the more theoretical junior-senior courses, especially those in abstract algebra and modern analysis.

The topics covered and the time spent on each will be determined by the progress of the class. We are under no pressure to rush through a set syllabus. However, I'll always be pressing you to work hard!
