Mathematical writing
-
Lyn Dupre,
Bugs in Writing: A Guide to Debugging Your Prose
(revised second edition), Addison-Wesley Professional, 1998. A guide for technical writers. I don't think I agree with everything in this book, but a lot of people swear by it.
- Tim Hsu's notes on writing math in "paragraph style".
- Steven Kleiman's notes on writing a "Phase II" paper at MIT give some good general guidance about mathematical writing.
- Mary Claire van Leunen, A Handbook for Scholars, (second edition), Oxford University Press, 1992. A wonderful book on scholarly and technical writing, with a lot of sensible information about citation. This will be on reserve in the UMass library.
- Edward R. Tufte, The Cognitive Style of PowerPoint, Graphics Press, 2003. We'll be looking at how to do presentations of mathematical material. This is a polemic about the problems of presentations in general and will be on reserve. Tufte is the author of three beautiful books on the visual presentation of data. You might also like to look at Peter Norvig's PowerPoint version of the Gettysburg Address.
- Charles Wells's book on mathematical discourse has a lot of material on the subtle differences between mathematical language and the way we ordinarily speak and write.
