Biography
Patrick Flaherty is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at UMass Amherst. He is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the College of Computer and Information Sciences and a member of the Molecular and Cellular Biology Program. He earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 2006 from UC Berkeley and was a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Biochemistry at Stanford university from 2006 to 2012. From 2012 to 2015, he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. His research interests bridge statistics, computer science, and the biological sciences. His papers have appeared in Annals of Applied Statistics, Technometrics, BMC Bioinformatics, AISTATS, NeurIPS, PLOS Genetics and Nature, and his lab has been funded by grants from NIH, NSF, and the PhRMA Foundation. He teaches classes on inferential and computational statistics at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He has served as Area Chair for NeurIPS, Associate Editor for Computational Statistics and the Journal of Classification as well as study sections for NIH and NSF. He was awarded best student paper award at NeurIPS and the Lilly Fellowship for Teaching Excellence at UMass Amherst.
