Homework

HWs are due in class on date listed below. If you turn in your HW late, please email the grader Kader Geraldo (last name at math dot umass dot edu) for instructions on how to do it. It is up to the Kader whether any late HWs are accepted. (For example, Kader may have already graded the HWs and needs to work on his own coursework and thus be unable to grade your HW.) If Kader is willing to grade your late HWs, any late HW has a 25% penalty if Kader receives late 24 hours or less and 50% penalty if the grader receives it between 24 hours and one week late. No HWs that are late more than one week will be accepted. Please make sure to staple all pages. The grader is not responsible for lost pages. Include all scripts and figures. Make sure to make copies of the HW so that you can use them to study for exams in case they are not returned early enough.

  • ``HW 0" (less weight than other HWs). Due Feb 1. Email it@umass.edu as soon as possible and request your free one-year student license for MATLAB. Allow time for response because early semester is busy for them. Use the license to download MATLAB. Familiarize yourself with MATLAB by reading some of the tutorials and compiling some sample codes on the MATLAB site. Look over (a real) HW 1 to make sure you are not in over your head, as HW 1 is due after add/drop deadline. Turn the following `baby assignment': (1) Produce with MATLAB a program that plots on a single plot the graphs of 2^x and x^2 from x=-1 to x=4. The horizontal axis should have your first name and the vertical your last (family) name. Include the print out of the plot and the code. (2) Produce with MATLAB a program that will compute the square of the 5 by 5 Hilbert matrix. (See example_hilbert.m in the MATLAB links page.) Print out the code and and your answer. Be sure to use two nested for loops.

  • HW 1. Due Feb 8. HW 1 solutions (solns available Feb 15).

  • HW 2. Due Feb 15. HW 2 solutions (solns available Feb 22).

  • HW 3. Due Feb 22. HW 3 solutions (solns available Feb 27).

  • HW 4. Due Feb 27. (NOTE TUES due date. This material will be covered on Thurs March 1 Midterm.) HW 4 solutions (solns available Feb 27 for exam purposes, and so HW 4 cannot be turned in late).

  • HW 5. Due March 29. HW 5 solutions (solns available April 5). I didn't have time on 3/8 to talk about norms, so the ``l_2 norm" of a vector v in the HW is just the usual norm of the vector v. Norms are the first thing I will talk about on 3/20.

  • HW 6. Due April 5. HW 6 solutions (solns available April 12)

  • HW 7. Due April 19. HW 7 solutions (solns available April 26)

  • HW 8. Due TUESDAY May 1. HW 8 solutions (solns available FRIDAY May 4)
