Description

This course is the first of a 3-semester sequence (131-132-233), covering standard material on differential and integral calculus at an intermediate level: more sophisticated (and much faster moving) than high school calculus, but with less emphasis on theoretical rigor than in advanced courses such as Math 425, 523 and 524. Instead the emphasis is on basic concepts, methods, and applications suitable for students majoring in engineering, natural sciences, computer science, and mathematics.

Text

Enhanced WebAssign is required for this course. Your purchase of Enhanced WebAssign includes the e-Text "Calculus: Early Transcendentals" (8th edition) by James Stewart. You can go to www.webassign.net and purchase a single term access or a life-of-edition access. Note the single term access is valid one semester, while the life-of-edition access is valid for all three courses, Math 131, 132 and 233, provided you remain on track. If you do not take the courses consecutively, you may have to enroll in a class which requires a later edition of the book, or even a different book. You will need the Course Key from your instructor to purchase the e-Text this way. You may also purchase the Hybrid edition of the book from Amazon.com. If you acquire a physical book (via Amazon.com or elsewhere) BE SURE IT INCLUDES ENHANCED WEBASSIGN and is for the 8th edition.

Algebra and Trigonometry Review

Here is a pdf for a brief review of algebra and trigonometry material that you should be comfortable with at the start of the course.

Calculator

The use of calculators WILL NOT be permitted on exams or quizzes.

Exams

Exam 1: Tues Feb 27th, 7-9pm
Exam 2: Tues Apr 3rd, 7-9pm

Makeup exams will only be given for reasons described in the UMass Amherst Class Absence Policy here.

The final (date to be determined) will be cumulative, with some emphasis placed on topics covered after the second exam. You are allowed to bring in one (single-side only) page of notes. The date and time of the final exam will be scheduled by the university. The final will only be given at that time, and not at any other time for any reason. In particular, adjust your travel plans accordingly; planning to leave for vacation before the final exam is a bad idea.

Grading

The grading of the course will be as follows. There will be a final exam worth 25%, two exams during the semester worth 40% for MAX(EX1,EX2) and 10% for MIN(EX1,EX2), a weekly quiz (lowest 2 dropped) worth 10%, and weekly online homework (lowest 2 dropped) worth 15%.
Scales for letter grades

Homework

We will use the online homework system WebAssign: www.webassign.net

By the second class meeting at the latest, your instrutor will provide you with a Class Key from WebAssign to allow you to self-enroll in the system.

It is important that you complete these problems for several reasons:
